Dependent (adult child) coverage

Summary

Plans that provide coverage for dependents are required to extend the coverage of dependents to age 26, regardless of their eligibility for other insurance coverage. Plans must provide coverage to all eligible dependents, including those who:

  • Are not enrolled in school
  • Are not dependents on their parents' tax returns
  • Are married
  • Have coverage through their own plan where they work

Adult child coverage

Thanks to a provision in the Affordable Care Act, health care now runs in the family – a bit longer for dependent children.

Disabled dependents

Completion of the Disabled Dependent Child Certification form is required for dependents that are coming upon the limiting age and need benefits to continue due to a physical or mental disability. To determine if your dependent qualifies for the Disabled Dependent Benefit, completion of this form by the employee and treating medical provider is required.
